چکیده
Abstract Douglas-fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), one of the most commercially important tree species in western North America and valuable timber trees worldwide, was introduced to Europe 1827. It became a major for afforestation Western after WWII, currently grows 35 countries on over 0.83 million ha is widespread non-native across continent. A lower sensitivity drought makes potential alternative more drought-sensitive Norway spruce so its importance expected increase future. fastest growing conifer cultivated Europe, with largest reported dimensions 2.3 m diameter 67.5 height. Pure stands have high productivity (up 20 3 −1 ) production (over 1000 ). The generally regenerated by planting (initial stocking density from less than seedlings 4000 ), using European provenance derived seed orchards or certified stands. As range end-uses wood very wide, rotation period highly variable ranges between 40 120 years. When large-sized, knot-free targeted, thinnings are always coupled pruning up 6 m. There an increasing interest mixtures managing through close-to-nature silviculture, but species’ intermediate shade tolerance means that it best managed group selection shelterwood systems.

Effects of Harvesting Systems and Bole Moisture Loss on Weight Scaling of Douglas-Fir Sawlogs (Pseudotsuga Menziesii var. glauca Franco)
Characterizing the moisture loss from felled trees is essential for determining weight-to-volume (W-V) relationships in softwood sawlogs. Several factors affect moisture loss, but research to quantify the effects of bole size and harvest method is limited. This study was designed to test whether bole size, harvest method, environmental factors, and the associated changes in stem moisture conten...

Adaptation to cold is one of the greatest challenges to forest trees. This process is highly synchronized with environmental cues relating to photoperiod and temperature. Here, we use a candidate gene-based approach to search for genetic associations between 384 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers from 117 candidate genes and 21 cold-hardiness related traits. A general linear model app...
متن کاملEffects of Cattle Grazing on Birds in Interior Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) Forests of British Columbia
Livestock grazing is a dominant land use across North America and although the effects of grazing on birds have been studied in grassland, shrubland, and riparian habitats, studies of the effects in forests are rare. We investigated the effects of cattle grazing in forests on vegetation, the relationships between vegetation characteristics and the abundance of foraging and nesting guilds of bir...
متن کاملDeriving Fuel Mass by Size Class in Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning
Requirements for describing coniferous forests are changing in response to wildfire concerns, bio-energy needs, and climate change interests. At the same time, technology advancements are transforming how forest properties can be measured. Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) is yielding promising results for measuring tree biomass parameters that, historically, have required costly destructive sam...
متن کاملTrapping Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsugae) with pheromone baited multiple-funnel traps does not reduce Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) mortality
Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins) (DFB) causes considerable mortality to Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) in western North American forests. We evaluated the use of semiochemical-baited multiple-funnel traps for the protection of small, high-value stands of trees, such as those occurring in campgrounds, rest areas, and small parks when Douglas-fir mortalit...
